Hilton Sandton Sun Johannesburg South Africa

We booked the Hilton Sandton Sun as it was part of a sale of weekend rates which included a late check out which we needed as we had late flights back to London. The deal also included breakfast.

Overall I found the Hilton to be a good hotel. It is a typical Hilton in terms of decor, rooms and service. We did have a few problems and they were sorted out quickly (if not with enthusiasm). The room we checked into had been smoked in by the previous occupant (even though the hotel is non-smoking) and as soon as new rooms came available we could move to a new one, then there were no towels in our new room and within less than 10 minutes after calling housekeeping brought them.

The rooms are very typical Hilton size and colours with the very comfortable beds and pillows. There was coffee and tea making facilities, there are some satellite TV channels and paid for internet access. It was very slow and did not really work for me.

There is a large and unusual shaped pool which was not that busy, and a fairly well equipped gym that does feel quite dated though.

The hotel is not very attractive from the outside but functional inside. It is located near to Sandton city shops and the trendy and popular Nelson Mandela Square with many upmarket shops and restaurants (which is worth going to in the evening).

You ideally need a car, but there is a regular hotel shuttle to and from the shops.

Overall a safe and fine place to stay if on business or there for a few days.

It is about 20 miles (about 45 minutes in rush hour) from the OR Tambo Airport.
