Cruise Referral Programs: How To Get Discounts & Free Onboard Credit

There is a really simple way to save money on a cruise that many cruisers either don’t know about or forget to use: cruise referral programs.

Several cruise lines have “Refer A Friend” programs that reward both an existing guest and someone cruising with that line for the first time.

The new cruiser can receive a discount on their cruise fare or onboard credit, while the past guest who referred them receives a future cruise discount, fare credit or onboard credit too.

And these aren’t always small amounts.

I’ve been reminded just how valuable cruise referral programs can be after several people recently named me as the person who referred them to cruise lines including Crystal, Silversea and Ponant.

For example, a recent referral to Silversea earned both the new guest and me a $500 saving! Thanks to two earlier Silversea referrals, I’ve already been able to take $1,000 off one of my future bookings for next year.

With Crystal, the potential saving can be even greater because its referral benefit is based on a percentage of the cruise fare (5%).

So, if you are about to cruise with a line for the first time, this is something I recommend checking before you book — or immediately afterwards.

How Do Cruise Referral Programs Work?

Although the rules differ between cruise lines, the basic principle is the same.

An existing past guest refers someone who has never cruised with that line before. The new guest provides the cruise line with details of the person who referred them with their loyalty-program number.

Once the referral is accepted and the qualifying conditions are met, both cruisers receive a benefit.

Depending on the cruise line, that could be money off the cruise fare, onboard credit or credit towards a future cruise.

You don’t normally need to book directly with the cruise line either. If you use a travel agent, as I do, they can usually arrange the referral for you.

But there are some important rules and deadlines to be aware of, which I’ll come to shortly.

Which Cruise Lines Have Refer-A-Friend Programs?

These are some of the cruise referral programs I have found. Offers and conditions can change, so always check the cruise line’s current terms before booking.

Crystal Refer A Friend Program

Crystal has one of the potentially most valuable cruise referral programs.

A guest who is new to Crystal can receive 5% off their cruise fare, while the Crystal Society member who referred them receives a credit equivalent to the same amount.

That means the value increases substantially on an expensive cruise.

For example, on a qualifying $20,000 cruise fare, 5% would be worth $1,000.

Crystal has specific rules covering eligibility, when the referral needs to be submitted and how referrals can be made, so check those before relying on the saving.

Silversea Referral Program

The Silversea Venetian Society referral program is one I have personally benefited from several times.

An existing Venetian Society member can refer someone who has never sailed with Silversea before, with both receiving $500 per suite in savings on qualifying bookings.

An existing member can refer up to 10 new-to-Silversea friends per calendar year and can apply up to four qualifying referral savings — potentially $2,000 — to one booking.

I’ve already used $1,000 of referral credits against one of my future Silversea cruises.

One thing I particularly like about Silversea’s system is that I can see my referrals in my online account and allocate eligible credits to an existing booking before final payment.

PONANT Refer A Friend

PONANT also operates a referral program offering savings to both the existing PONANT guest and the person they introduce to the line.

The amount varies by market, so rather than assuming the same figure applies everywhere, check the PONANT site for your country and the current offer.

Regent Seven Seas Ambassador Program

Regent Seven Seas Cruises calls its referral scheme the Ambassador Program.

An existing Seven Seas Society member can introduce a new-to-Regent cruiser, with both receiving a saving on a qualifying booking.

The published benefit has been $250 for the existing Regent guest and $250 for the new guest, although always check the current offer.

There are also rules about how quickly the referral must be registered after the new guest books.

Seabourn Referral Program

Seabourn Club members can also benefit from introducing first-time cruisers to Seabourn.

The program has offered $250 in shipboard credit per suite to both the existing Seabourn guest and the first-time guest.

This is another program where it is particularly important to check how the referral has to be registered and redeemed rather than assuming the credit will be added automatically.

Holland America Refer A Friend

Holland America Line operates a more modest referral program, but it is still effectively free money if you qualify.

Under the program, the new Holland America guest receives $50 onboard credit, while the person referring them receives a $50 Future Cruise Credit once the qualifying conditions have been met.

There are geographical and other eligibility restrictions, so check the terms before booking.

Ambassador Cruise Line Refer A Friend

Ambassador Cruise Line’s program gives both the existing guest and their referred friend onboard credit, with the amount based on the length of the cruise.

The current published levels run from £50 onboard credit for cruises of 7–14 nights up to £250 for cruises of more than 50 nights.

There is no limit to the number of friends that can be referred during a 12-month period, and credits from multiple qualifying referrals can potentially be combined.

AmaWaterways Referral Program

AmaWaterways also rewards past guests for introducing new cruisers to river cruising.

The line periodically runs enhanced referral promotions. At the time of writing, it is offering a limited-time $200-per-stateroom referral saving for qualifying 2026 bookings, with benefits for both the new guest and the person making the referral.

There are limits on how much accumulated referral credit can be applied to an individual cruise, and referral savings expire, so check the current offer rather than assuming the promotional amount will continue indefinitely.

Uniworld Referral Program

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises also has a referral program for existing guests introducing friends and family to the line.

Its program has offered the referred guest $100 per person off their first cruise, while the existing Uniworld guest earns $100 per person towards a future cruise.

Again, check the current eligibility and redemption rules when booking.

Cruise Referral Program Rules You Need To Watch

This is where things can get complicated.

Don’t assume you can sort out the referral whenever you like. Some cruise lines require the referral to be registered when the cruise is booked or within a relatively short period afterwards.

So, ideally, investigate the referral program before making your booking.

Also check when the person making the referral actually receives their reward. It may not become available until the new guest has paid their deposit or final balance, or in some programs until they have actually sailed.

Another important issue is how you redeem the credit.

With Silversea, for example, I can see qualifying referral credits in my account and allocate them to bookings. With other lines, you may need to contact the cruise line or ask your travel agent to apply them.

There can also be restrictions on the number of people you can refer each year, how many referral credits can be combined on one cruise and whether the benefit can be combined with other promotions.

And there’s another rule that’s particularly relevant in the age of Facebook groups, forums and social media.

Some cruise lines regard these as genuine friend-and-family referral programs and specifically restrict people from publicly canvassing strangers, advertising their loyalty number or asking large numbers of people online to name them as their referrer.

So don’t assume you can post your membership details all over social media and collect unlimited referral credits. Read the terms.

How To Get A Cruise Referral Discount

If you’re considering a cruise line you’ve never sailed with before, my advice is simple.

Before booking, search the cruise line’s website for “Refer A Friend”, “Referral Program” or “Ambassador Program.”

If it has one, think about who introduced you to the cruise line. It might be a friend or family member, or simply someone whose recommendation persuaded you to give the line a try.

Ask them if they’re a past guest and whether they’re eligible to refer you.

You will normally need some combination of their name, email address and cruise-line loyalty membership number. Your travel agent may be able to handle the referral when making your reservation, or the cruise line may have an online referral form.

Most importantly, don’t leave it until months after you’ve booked.

An Easy Cruise Saving That’s Often Overlooked

There are plenty of complicated strategies for trying to get a cheaper cruise, but this is one of the easiest.

If you’re already planning to book the cruise anyway, a referral could potentially give you anything from a small amount of onboard credit to hundreds — or even thousands — of dollars off the cost of a cruise.

And the person who helped persuade you to try that cruise line gets rewarded too.

So, before booking your first cruise with any line, add one more question to your booking checklist:

Does this cruise line have a referral program?

It could be one of the easiest cruise savings you ever make.

Referral programs, amounts, eligibility and terms change frequently and can vary by country. Always check the cruise line’s current terms and conditions before booking or relying on a referral benefit.
