In “Back the the Future” Marty visits Bif who lives in a Penthouse in The Plaza in Las Vegas. After years of decline, this part of Las Vegas is back. It is a real taste of the past looking to the future. How apt that the film takes part here.

The original centre and heart of Las Vegas is not on “the Strip” that most tourists tend to stick to these days drawn by the mega resorts, theme hotels and glitzy new tower blocks. Although it had been in decline for many years, there is a real sense of revival and energy back in downtown Las Vegas. The centre of the action is The Fremont Experience. This is a massive open air roof screen that projects concerts and shows at night on the hour. All along the street are the original Las Vegas casinos. I had given the area a miss on many visits over the last few years as I felt it was getting run down, felt unsafe and was not worth going to.

Things are changing. Money is being spent in bringing back downtown Las Vegas. In addition to the Fremont experience, hotels like The Plaza (as from “Back to the Future” films) has been revamped. The new city hall building and high tech companies are moving in.

I love the feeling of the old casinos and the style of lights on the area. Many of the buildings were covered with lights in the day as they were ugly buildings, and now the feeling of the area is retro, classic and feels like stepping back into an old film set. I love it. Visit at night of course…!

Thanks for the information, Gary. We will definitely check it out next time we are there.

  2. Must admit I’ve never really fancied Vegas until recently that is, as I find myself more and more drawn to the bizzareness of it all! Hope I get to see for myself one day!
