I had always wanted to visit St. Petersburg and the Hermitage Museum. I finally got to go there when I travelled with Silversea Cruises on a Baltic cruise. We spent 3 days in the city and went on an early morning tour of the Hermitage on one of the days. Some tours allow you to get into the museum before the official opening and so you can tour the museum before it gets chock full and you have to shuffle around each room. This is a strong tip having been there. The museum gets uncomfortably busy and getting to see it when it is empty is magical. You will see this in the video tour I made that takes you through the stunning rooms that are almost empty – and ends with a shot of the people pouring through the museum by the end of our tour.

Watch my video tour of the Hermitage Museum:

The museum is hosted in 5 buildings and has over 3 million treasures. The most impressive part of the museum is the Winter Palace building. This is where the Tzars used to live and is hard to describe. The video tour and photos are the best way to explain how amazing it is. The opulence and richness is staggering. The buildings are worth going for in their own right, and you almost forget all the artworks by every famous artist.

What time did your tour group arrive to beat all the others? I’m considering a cruise there this summer and hope to choose a private tour that can arrange an early visit as well.
    All the best,
    Courtney

    • You should check if your cruise line offers a pre-opening excursion as that is how we did it. We got in about an hour before the main opening. It really did make a huge difference. I believe some of the private tour guides can also offer this. But the cruise lines do seem to often have that option. Gary
