ITB Berlin: The World’s Largest Travel Show, Walking Expedition & Travel Love Fest

…y. Being lazy and not liking walking are not ideal traits for visiting ITB Berlin – as I discovered. At my first ITB Travel Exhibition and Conference in Berlin I walked more each day than in any day of my 53 years to date. People had warned me that ITB was the largest travel exhibition in the world, but not really given me a perspective on how absolutely huge and spread out it is. It spans many halls and has a huge geographic footprint. It is an e…

Hotel Berlin, Berlin Review. Old Creaking Body Dressed Up To Look New

…ll an old tart. This pretty much summarizes my view of the Hotel Berlin in Berlin. It is an old and dated building that they have tried to tart up and make look trendy, funky and modern. But the problem is that the body beneath the new clothes and lipstick is not up to scratch. It is failing. On a superficial level, they have done a decent job of this tried and uninspiring block of concrete. The lobby is bright, white and modern. The bar is trendy…

Grand Hyatt Hotel in Berlin Germany: modern, friendly and great place to stay

I really liked the Grand Hyatt Berlin. It is a modern, high tech, stylish and well located hotel. Opposite the large Potsdamer theatre and right in the heart of shops, cafes and restaurants the hotel is new and trendy. From the ouitside it is not that remarkable, but inside they have found some interesting and quirky design and art features that add interest and style. The rooms are great. I was upgraded to a club room on the 7th floor. The rooms…

HILTON MILLENIUM HOTEL, NEW YORK, USA: noisy due to ground zero building

…it on this trip. The hotel is right next to the famous Century 21 discount label department store and an easy 10 minute walk to South Street Sea Port area with its shops and museums and the major drop off and pick up for the round Manhattan bus tours. But overall, it is not a very handy destination for tourists as far from the shopping areas and Central Park etc. Overall, I liked the room a lot but the noise of construction did wake me up earlier…

Getting Disembarkation Day Right

The Best Way To End Your Cruise: Getting Disembarkation Day Right

…if you are putting your luggage out keep the tear off tag from the luggage label, that will remind you what allocated slot you have and, as some cruise lines require us to show our luggage tag colour to let you off the ship, the allocated time. Finally, when packing, don’t pack the cruise line umbrella, dressing gown, binoculars or other bits and pieces around the cabin. These 7 Things Throw Norwegian Fjords Cruisers Every Time!

…ke design. And of course, they have trolls everywhere. Always check on the label where they’re made. I would stress again that Norway is very expensive. The currency is the Norwegian kroner, and because it’s not the Euro, the exchange rate is more complicated, it’s easy to get confused about how much you’re paying. Make sure you understand it. On the plus side, many of the souvenir shops will take Euros and some will take dollars or UK Sterling. I…

I Tried the World’s “Most Popular Small Ship Cruise” Line: Windstar Cruises

…ut the overall dress code was very relaxed. This was not a flashy designer label for dinner experience, it was more like when I have been on an expedition cruise. In short, were what you bring and wear was low on the list. Personal Feel The third thing was with a maximum of 312 guests and 200 crew. People said they liked that they got to know the crew and vice versa. They liked always being called by name. As the same crew would man lunch, dinner,…

Madrid Spain: my top travel tips for a weekend break in this stylish city

Madrid Spain: my top travel tips for a weekend break in this stylish city

…id is the 3rd largest city in Europe based on population, after London and Berlin. Situated almost slap bang in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid is the capital of Spain with a long history. There are huge wide streets and boulevards, and across the years there have been major and grand plans as the city expanded which meant the city has a sense and feeling of open spaces and feels less cramped, cluttered and rushed. The whole city has a…

What is the future of cruising? Cruise CEOs Versus Travellers

…middle aged men who run major cruise lines in Europe. The stage was at ITB Berlin, the world’s largest travel show. The promise was that they would tell us what the future of the cruise industry over the next 10 years will be. From what I could see we were looking at a group of corporate “suit” types, the type that I have been used to dealing with throughout my business and marketing career. A thrilling, inspiring reveal is not normally forthcomin…
