It was when listening to one of my favorite travel podcasts, I realized I was asking a very narrow question – assuming that everyone likes to book online and with a general travel site. This works for many people – but not everyone. One of the podcasts that I subscribe to, and have done almost since it started 2 years ago, is called the Home Based Travel Podcast. One of the recurring themes and advice Barry Kantz, who runs the podcast, keeps giving for travel agents to have a specialty and use that to understand the needs in detail and provide a very specific service for a very specific target or destination be it for cruising or whatever.
It was with this in mind that when I came to read about “Golden Rule Travel” that this really struck me as a specialist agency.
Golden Rule Travel is a travel agent for missionaries!
Yes, actual missionaries! Their slogan is: "When God’s call sends you around the world, a call to Golden Rule Travel” will take you there. The site says it started by a chap called Marvin Mast in 1985 as a home based service and grew from there. They claim to specialize in getting very low flight fares for humanitarian and religious organizations where cost is a major issue. They do this by not using an online tool but having their staff, which on the site they say are Christians and include ministers etc now in the business, do the search and also provide a round the clock help service.
Now that is servicing a very clear niche traveler!
Do you know of any other niche travel agents? Leave a comment or email me!
